As per National Association for Gifted Children, the term “gifted,” describes individuals who demonstrate outstanding aptitude or competence in one or more domains. An “aptitude” is there defined as an exceptional ability to learn or reason. “Competence” is defined as documented performance or achievement in the top 10 percent of the population.
Mentoring involves a more knowledgeable and experienced individual helping a less experienced individual reach a major life goal. The relationship is based on trust and a genuine desire for growth and learning.
Mentors are more than role models. In addition to providing skills, they support and challenge as they help their younger charges develop a vision for the future. They teach, counsel, engage and inspire and often serve as friends throughout the process.
Mentoring can also be defined as a means to an end with the end being any objective that a mentor and mentee agree is important to a child’s development. An end can be excelling in competitive exams to secure a place in a good college or identifying and completing the many steps involved in applying to a technical school or college. Essence of good mentoring is helping a young person get to where he or she wants to go. Most essential feature of whatever ends are identified is that they are explored and mutually agreed upon by the mentor and mentee – and then revisited and refined as the mentoring relationship evolves.
A mentorship is a dynamic, shared relationship in which values, attitudes, passions and traditions are passed from one person to another and internalized. Its purpose is to transform lives.
